On 12 May 2022, Rukumbuzi Delphin Ntanyoma will defend his thesis investigating why individual combatants engage and disengage with armed groups in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

He reveals the motives of individuals to engage, or not, in violence. The results of his research shows that vulnerability to poverty and to violence plays an important role in armed mobilization and suggests that discontent arising from relative deprivation plays a central role.
